Types of friction in engineering mechanics

In this article you will get to know about different types of friction, first you will read the definition of friction after that how many types they are. One more thing i want to say, If you really want to know about friction then in this article you will get your answer, So let’s start the topic.

Friction definition

The interlocking property of the projecting particle opposes the motion this opposing force which act in the opposite direction of the movement of the block or object is called friction.

There are two types of friction

  1. Static Friction.
  2. Dynamic Friction or Kinetic Friction.

Static friction and kinetic friction

Static friction – It is a friction experienced by body when it is act rest that friction is called static friction.

on other words

It is a branch of engineering which deals with the forces and their effect while acting under a body at rest.

Kinetic friction – It is a friction experienced by body when it is act motion that friction is called dynamic or kinetic friction.              In other words the definition of dynamic friction

It is the branch of engineering which deals with the forces and their effect while acting under a body in motion.                                The dynamic friction is two types.

  1. Sliding Friction
  2. Rolling Friction

What are sliding friction and rolling friction

 Sliding friction – It is a friction experienced by body when it is slides over another body.                                                                             Example – When one object slides to another object.

 Rolling friction – It is a friction experienced by body when it is rolling over the body.                                                                                   Example – When a ball rolling on the surface.

What is the limiting friction ?

The maximum value of frictional force which comes into play when the body slide over the surface other body is know as limiting friction. It may be note when applied force is less then the limiting friction the body remain at rest the friction may called between 0 and limiting friction.

What is angle of friction ?

Consider a body of weight ‘W’ resting on an inclined plain we know that the body is equilibrium and the weight of the body.

Frictional force acting upward along the plane and normal friction acting an right angle to the plane.

Let the angle of inclination α weight is increase till the body just sliding on the plane, this angle of inclined plane at which a body just being the down is know as the angle of friction.

This is also equal to the angle which the normal reaction makes with the vertical.

Types of friction in engineering mechanics

Define normal reaction

It has been experienced that whenever a body lying on a horizontal or an inclined surface is a equilibrium it’s weight acts vertically downward through its center of gravity. The surface in turn exert an upward reaction an the body.

It is denote by ‘R’ and the force of frictional is directly proportional to it.

Types of friction in engineering mechanics

Define coefficient of friction

It is the ratio of limiting friction to the normal reaction between the two bodies and it is usually denote by μ.

    μ = F/R = tanΦ                                                                                                                                                                                                                F = μR

Where ,  F = Frictional force

 R = Normal reaction

 Φ = Angle of friction

 μ = Coefficient of friction

Now we will read what are the two types of law of friction.                                                                                                                                   So basically it is two type

  1. Law of static friction
  2. Law of kinetic friction

What is law of static friction

The force of friction always in a direction opposite to that in which the body tends to move it the force of friction on would be absent.

The magnitude of the limiting friction constant ratio to the normal reaction the body. Hence the magnitude of the limiting friction constant to the normal reaction between two  F/R constant.

The forces of friction independents of the area of constant between the two surface, so the force of friction depends upon the roughness of the surface.

What is law of kinetic friction

The force of friction always acts in a direction opposite to that in which the body is moving. And the magnitude of kinetic friction bears a constant ratio to the normal reaction between two surface. So for moderate speed the force of friction remains constant.

So this was about friction, By the way we cannot do anything without friction. Friction is very important in our life because due to friction we can walk, write, run, If there was no friction we would have slipped while walking, we cannot write. We can do all the work comfortably because of the friction. I hope you understand very well , Thank you
