Static relay definition

A relay that does not have any moving parts calls a static relay. In this type of relay, the output is obtained by static components such as magnetic and electronic circuits.

The relay which contains static and electromagnetic relays is also know as static relay. This is because electromagnetic relays are use only for switching operation and static units are use to get the feedback.

The Rectifying Measurement Unit consists of a comparator, level detector and logic circuits. When the signal reaches the threshold value then only we get the output signal from the relaying unit. The output of the relaying measuring unit serves as the input of the amplifier. The amplifier amplifies the signal and gives the output to the output device.

The output device will energize the trip coil only when the relay is operates. When a measurement has a well defined value then only we get the output from the output device. Here the output device is activated and it gives tripping command to the trip circuit.

These static relays only respond to electrical signals. Other physical quantities such as heat are temperature etc. First it converts analog and digital electrical signals and then it acts as an input for the relay.

  • This relay consumes very little power and due to this it reduces the load on the measuring instruments and increases their accuracy.
  • This type of relay gives quick response and has long life, high reliability, accuracy and shockproof.
  • The reset time of the relay is very short.
  • There is no thermal storage problem in this type of relay
  • Relays amplify the input signal thus increasing their sensitivity.
  • Chances of unwanted tripping are less in static relays.
  • Static relays can work easily in earthquake-prone areas because they have high resistance to shocks.
